Department of Science and Technology
(DST) under its Inter-Sectoral Science and Technology Advisory Committee has
launched a program on Participation of youngsters in Real
time/field Observation to Benefit the Education
(PROBE). The aim is to encourage participation of the students in acquiring,
generating and using data as well as learning to make scientific observations.
The program aims at making science education interesting and useful. It is
envisaged to be a countrywide program to be implemented in about 10,000
schools.
A Pilot Experiment U-PROBE has been
started in the Uttarakhand State with the participation of Education
Department, Government of Uttarakhand. The pilot program aims at the
participation of school children in collection of data in the mountain region
with special reference to Climate and Weather related information. It will be a
model project and will be implemented in 100 schools in the first phase.
The initiative aims at linking
students, teachers, scientific community and the development workers at the
grassroots level. It will initiate a process of participative data collection
and observation by school children as a means of scientific learning. The data
thus collected will be studied and analyzed by the scientist and will help the
development planners to make strategies for sustainable mountain development.
NGO will also facilitate the program and help disseminate the result to the
community.
